- The Wine Vaults History The present building was built in the eighteenth century, and the front doors adorned with the Tuscan colonnade of six columns covering. It's cellars indicate it's existance as a pub at an earlier date and was known as The Black Horse during the 1820's, then The Spirit Vault. It once was used by royalists hiding during the Civil War and also apparently was connected to underground tunnels which were used as a means of escape. It is situated 5 minutes from the historic and beautiful Ruthin Castle and its extensive grounds. The Tontine Friendly Society was founded here in 1903. This was one of three friendly societies in town in which labourers made small weekly contributions into a fund which would then support them in times of ill health or unemployment. These friendly societies also provided house loans to members, who would have been unable to buy property without it's help.
